How to Listen to ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini Responses
ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini all speak responses, but differently. When Readox is the better fit for shortcuts, cleanup, or listen-later.
As of April 27, 2026, ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini can all read their answers out loud. But they don’t all do it the same way.
ChatGPT has two ways: a Read aloud button on each answer, and a separate Voice Mode. Claude has Voice Mode but no Read aloud button on the web. Gemini has a Listen button plus Gemini Live, and where they show up depends on the device. Readox is for the listening you do around those answers. That includes answers you’ve cleaned up, things you’ve saved, notes you’ve pasted in, and text from outside the chat.

The top three rows show what each chat tool can do by itself. The bottom five show what’s missing, and where Readox fills the gap.
ChatGPT: Read aloud vs Voice Mode
ChatGPT has two voice features that are easy to mix up.
Read aloud is a button on each answer. You click the speaker icon, and ChatGPT reads that one answer out loud. It has many voices and works in many languages. It does not move on to the next answer by itself. On some devices, the button sits inside a ⋮ menu instead of right under the answer. If you can’t find it, check that menu.
Voice Mode is different. It lets you talk to ChatGPT and have it talk back, like a phone call. ChatGPT acts a little differently in voice. It chats more and gives less detail than the typed version. There’s more in the ChatGPT Voice Mode FAQ.
Voice Mode still works on chatgpt.com, iOS, Android, and the Windows app. It was taken out of the macOS app on January 15, 2026. If you used it on a Mac, you can still use it on the web.
ChatGPT also lets you upload files and images on the web and on phones. The limits depend on your plan. There’s also a feature called visual retrieval that reads pictures and charts inside a PDF. That one is only on the Enterprise plan. Other plans pull out the text only.
Claude: Voice Mode
Claude is simpler. There is no Read aloud button on each answer on the web. The only voice feature is Voice Mode. It is a beta feature, in English only. It works on the web, iOS, and Android. All plans get it.
Voice Mode is for talking back and forth, not for reading a written answer out loud. If you got a long answer and want to hear it on the web, Claude doesn’t have a button for that. You can either start a voice chat, or copy the answer into something else that can read it.
Claude also lets you upload files and images, as shown in its file uploads guide. So the cleanup steps below work the same way they do in ChatGPT and Gemini.
Gemini: Listen vs Gemini Live
Gemini is set up the same way. There’s a button for each answer, plus a real-time voice mode.
Listen is the button that reads an answer out loud. It is the same idea as ChatGPT’s Read aloud. You pick the voice in the Gemini phone app, and that voice plays anywhere Gemini speaks, per Change Gemini’s voice. Where the button shows up depends on the device. It’s more reliable on phones than on a computer.
Gemini Live is the real-time voice chat mode. It works best on phones. It plays the same role as ChatGPT Voice Mode and Claude Voice Mode.
Gemini also lets you upload files on desktop and the web, so the same cleanup steps work here too.
How Readox fits in
Once a chat tool gives you something good, the next question is where to listen to it.
Here’s a flow that uses both:
- Upload a PDF, screenshot, or scanned page to ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini.
- Ask the model to clean up scanned text, simplify the words, or pull out the parts you need. (Getting AI summaries read aloud covers this step in more detail.)
- To hear the result right away, highlight it and use Read selection. The shortcut version is in the keyboard shortcuts guide.
- To hear it later, use Save selection to library or Save page to library from the right-click menu. It goes into your library and works like any other saved item.
- If the result needs a small edit first, paste it into Readox’s text area and play it from there. Listening to your own notes and pasted text covers that in more detail.
Readox also handles the parts the chat tools can’t. If you start with a screenshot or a scanned page, Readox’s OCR for screenshots and scanned documents pulls out the text on its own, no chat tool needed. That helps when the cleanup step is too much, or when you don’t want to upload the file at all.
You can also mix the saved items in one queue. A cleaned-up ChatGPT answer can play right after a saved web page, a PDF chapter, or a note you pasted in. Library collections covers how to set those up.
This flow doesn’t replace ChatGPT’s Read aloud or Gemini’s Listen. Those are still best for hearing the answer right there in the chat. Readox is for everything that happens after you close the chat.
FAQ
Can ChatGPT read its responses out loud?
Yes. ChatGPT has a Read aloud button on most devices. It reads one answer at a time and does not move on to the next by itself. On some devices, the button sits inside a ⋮ menu instead of under the answer.
What is the difference between ChatGPT Read aloud and Voice Mode?
Read aloud reads an answer out loud. Voice Mode is a separate mode where you talk to ChatGPT and it talks back, like a phone call. ChatGPT acts differently in voice. It chats more and gives less detail.
Does Claude read responses aloud on the web?
Not with a button on each answer. Claude’s only voice feature is Voice Mode, and that is for talking back and forth, not for reading a written answer out loud. To hear a Claude answer read back, copy the text into something that can read it. Readox is one option.
Does Gemini read responses aloud on desktop?
Sometimes. Gemini has a Listen button, but where it shows up and how well it works changes from device to device. You set the voice in the Gemini phone app, and that voice is used wherever Gemini speaks.
Why is the read-aloud button missing?
In all three tools, the buttons on each answer can move around. They can hide behind a ⋮ icon, depending on your device, your account, or a recent update. If the button is missing, it’s usually one menu away. Readox also works as a backup when the built-in button isn’t where you expect it.
Can I autoplay AI responses?
None of the three do this on their own. ChatGPT Read aloud, Claude Voice Mode, and Gemini Listen each play one answer at a time. For a queue that plays across answers, or that mixes chat answers with other text, use Readox.
When should I use Readox instead?
Use Readox when you want shortcuts, cleanup, a listen-later queue, or playback without the internet. Use the chat tools when you just want to hear the answer right there in the chat.
Read aloud web pages and PDFs with premium English voices that run on your device.
