Terms of Service

These terms govern your use of the Readox browser extension and the readox.ai website. By installing or using the extension, or by visiting our website, you agree to these terms.

Description of service

Readox is a browser extension that reads web pages aloud using text-to-speech technology. It offers two tiers:

• Free — Browser voices, web pages and PDFs, selected text reading, word-by-word highlighting, OCR for images, and keyboard shortcuts. No account required.
• Pro — Premium on-device English voices and AI summaries. Requires a Google sign-in and active subscription.

Local and cloud processing

Readox uses a hybrid approach to processing:

• Text-to-speech — All speech synthesis, for both free and Pro users, is performed locally in your browser. If you choose to submit optional pronunciation feedback, limited feedback-related information may be sent to our servers to help improve the service.
• OCR (image scanning) — Text extraction from images runs locally in your browser. Images are never uploaded to our servers.
• AI summaries — This Pro feature sends text to our API for processing. We do not store the original source text, but we may temporarily cache the generated summary together with a content hash for up to one hour to make repeated summaries faster.

Audio content and personal use

Audio generated by Readox is produced locally on your device from content you are viewing in your browser. You acknowledge that:

• Audio output is intended for personal, non-commercial use only.
• You are responsible for ensuring you have the right to access and listen to the underlying text content.
• You may not use Readox to produce audio for redistribution, public broadcast, or commercial purposes.
• Readox does not grant you any rights to the text content of third-party websites.

Accounts and authentication

Pro features require signing in with a Google account. Your Pro subscription is associated with the Google account used when upgrading. You are responsible for using the correct account when purchasing or accessing Pro and for maintaining the security of that account.

Subscriptions and billing

• Pro subscriptions are billed on a monthly or annual basis through Stripe. Current pricing is shown on our website and in the extension at the time of purchase.
• You may cancel at any time from the account menu in the extension or through the Stripe customer portal. Your Pro access continues until the end of your current billing period.
• Refunds are handled on a case-by-case basis within 14 days of purchase. Contact us to request a refund.
• We reserve the right to change pricing. Existing subscribers will be notified at least 30 days before any price change takes effect on their account.

Usage limits

Pro subscriptions may include usage limits for certain cloud-processed features. Current plan details, included usage, and any applicable limits are provided through the extension and on the website. Usage counters reset at the start of each billing period. We may update limits or plan details from time to time, and if we do, we will provide notice before the change takes effect.

Acceptable use

You agree not to:

• Reverse-engineer, decompile, or modify the extension beyond normal use.
• Use the service to violate any applicable laws or third-party rights.
• Circumvent usage limits, access controls, or authentication mechanisms.
• Resell, sublicense, or redistribute access to the service.
• Use automated tools to abuse the service or its APIs.
• Use the extension to generate audio for commercial redistribution.

Intellectual property

The Readox extension, website, branding, and associated code are the property of Readox. Certain open-source components (including the voice synthesis model) are used under their respective open-source licenses. Your use of the extension does not grant you any ownership rights to our software or intellectual property.

Disclaimer of warranties

The service is provided "as is" and "as available" without warranties of any kind, express or implied. We do not guarantee that the service will be uninterrupted, error-free, or free of harmful components. Voice quality, OCR accuracy, and summarization quality may vary.

Limitation of liability

To the maximum extent permitted by law, Readox and its operators shall not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages arising from your use of or inability to use the service, including but not limited to loss of data, revenue, or profits.

Termination

We may suspend or terminate your access to the service at any time for violation of these terms, with or without notice. Upon termination, your right to use the service ceases immediately. Sections regarding intellectual property, limitations of liability, and indemnification survive termination.

Changes to terms

We may update these terms from time to time. If we make significant changes, we will notify users through the extension or by email. Continued use of the service after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated terms.

Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of the jurisdiction in which Readox operates, without regard to conflict of law principles.
