Privacy Policy
Last updated: March 7, 2026
Your privacy matters to us. Readox is designed so that most of what it does happens locally in your browser. This policy explains what data we collect, what stays on your device, and how we handle the rest.
Consent
By installing the Readox extension or using our website, you consent to this privacy policy. You can revoke access at any time by uninstalling the extension and, if applicable, canceling your subscription.
What stays on your device
The core of Readox runs locally. Reading and playback data is processed locally in your browser and is not sent to our servers unless you use a cloud feature or choose to submit optional feedback:
- Page text and selections — Any text you read aloud is processed locally. Premium English voices run on-device using a downloaded model.
- Audio output — Speech audio is generated locally and played back in your browser. We do not store, transmit, or have access to any audio produced by the extension.
- Voice model — Pro users download a voice model (~80 MB) that is cached in your browser's storage. The model runs entirely on your device.
- OCR (image scanning) — Text extraction from images runs entirely in your browser using on-device models. Images you scan are never sent to our servers.
- Settings and preferences — Voice selection, playback speed, and other settings are stored in your browser's local extension storage.
- Browsing history — We do not track, collect, or have access to which pages you visit.
What we collect
We collect the minimum data necessary to provide account, billing, and limited cloud features:
- Account information — If you sign in for Pro, we receive your Google account email and a unique account identifier to identify your account and subscription. The extension may also store your profile photo locally on your device so it can show your signed-in state.
- Subscription status — Whether you have an active Pro subscription, your plan type, and billing period dates. Billing is managed through Stripe.
- Usage counters — Aggregate counts of cloud-processed Pro features used during each billing period, such as AI summary requests. These are numerical counters only and do not include the text you read aloud.
- Pronunciation feedback — If you choose to submit optional pronunciation feedback, we may receive limited feedback-related information together with technical metadata so we can improve the service.
- Anonymous operational data — When OCR language packs or models are downloaded, we may record anonymous download counts so we can understand model usage and improve the service. This does not include page content, browsing history, or the text you read aloud.
Free users who never sign in do not send us account data, payment data, or the text they read aloud for text-to-speech. Some anonymous operational data, such as model download counts, may still be recorded.
Cloud-processed features
A small number of Pro features require server-side processing:
- Text-to-speech and OCR — These core reading features run on your device. If you choose to submit optional pronunciation feedback, limited feedback-related information may be sent to our servers to help improve the service.
- AI summaries — When you use Summarize mode, the text is sent to our API to generate a summary.
- Summary caching — We do not store the original source text for summarization. To make repeated summaries faster and avoid duplicate processing, we may temporarily store the generated summary together with a hash derived from the source text and summary settings. This cache is automatically deleted after up to one hour of inactivity.
Text-to-speech, the core feature, runs locally in your browser. If you choose to submit optional pronunciation feedback, limited feedback-related information may be sent to our servers to help improve the service.
Payments
Subscriptions are processed through Stripe. We do not collect, store, or have access to your credit card number, billing address, or other payment details. All payment data is handled directly by Stripe under their privacy policy.
We receive from Stripe only the information needed to manage your subscription, such as subscription status, plan type, customer identifiers, and billing period dates.
Data retention and deletion
Server-side data
- Account and subscription records are stored for the duration of your account and as needed to manage billing.
- Usage counters are retained as needed for billing-period tracking and account history.
- Cached summaries are automatically deleted after up to one hour of inactivity.
- To delete your account data, cancel your subscription and email us at the address below. We will delete your account record within 30 days, except where we must retain limited billing records for legal or accounting reasons.
Local data
- All local data (cached voice model, settings, authentication tokens) is stored in your browser's extension storage.
- You can clear this at any time by uninstalling the extension or clearing extension data in your browser settings.
Cookies
The Readox website uses essential cookies or similar browser storage required for core site functions such as sign-in. We also use Google Analytics to understand how people use the website and improve it. In regions where consent is required, Google Analytics is enabled only after you consent, and you can change or withdraw your choice at any time through Cookie Settings. We do not use advertising or remarketing cookies on the website. The extension itself does not use cookies.
Children's privacy
Readox is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided us with personal data, please contact us and we will delete it.
Information security
We use commercially reasonable measures to protect your data, including encrypted connections (HTTPS), secure authentication, and access controls on our infrastructure. However, no method of transmission over the internet is 100% secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.
Changes to this policy
We may update this privacy policy from time to time. If we make significant changes, we will notify users through the extension or by email. Continued use after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
