Premium Voices Are Now Free: English and Spanish

Natural-sounding voices, no account required, and no character caps. Spanish joins English, voice setup gets simpler, and Pro becomes an optional upgrade for summaries and a bigger library.

The voice you want to listen to should not be the reason you need a subscription.

Readox now makes premium voices free in American and British English and Spanish. No account, upgrade, character allowance, or per-character fees. Choose a voice and listen.

The voices still run on your device. Your text is not sent to a cloud voice service to generate premium speech.

Spanish joins the premium voice picker

The Spanish voices include:

Open the voice picker, switch the language to Spanish, and try the samples. English voices are still there too, including the American and British options you already know.

This is Spanish support for premium listening, not just a translated menu. You can use it for Spanish articles, documents, selected passages, or text you paste into Readox.

For other languages, browser voices remain available where your computer or browser supports them. Some browser voices use online services; Readox’s English and Spanish premium voices do not.

One download confirmation, in the same picker

The first-time setup is simpler:

  1. Select a premium voice in the voice picker.
  2. Confirm Download and use for that voice.
  3. Follow progress in the picker. If the download fails, retry there.

There is no second dialog. Selecting Not now, or closing the picker before confirming, leaves your current voice unchanged and does not start a download. Readox does not quietly switch you to a browser voice while a selected premium voice is getting ready.

Once the shared speech files are downloaded, you do not repeat the initial setup for every voice. Individual voice files download when you first use them.

That matters if you plan to go offline. Listen with each voice you want to use while you still have a connection, and make sure your reading is saved or already available. Initial setup does not download every individual voice file.

Premium playback needs a compatible computer and browser. If your device cannot run it, browser voices remain available.

No character caps on premium listening

Premium listening is not metered by the length of your reading.

You can listen to a short selection, a long article, a PDF, or your own text without spending a character allowance. The free voices work with the existing reading controls, highlighting, keyboard shortcuts, and main Library.

You do not need to sign in to start. The signed-out sidepanel now shows Settings instead of a prominent sign-in button, so account setup is not presented as the first step in listening.

What Pro is for now

Pro is an optional monthly plan for getting through your reading faster and keeping more of it organized:

The main Library is still free. Pro is useful when you want separate queues for work, study, longer reads, or review, rather than one catch-all backlog. Saved reading stays on your device by default; subscribing does not automatically upload or sync it.

The existing summary caps have not changed. Each request uses up to the first 40,000 characters, and summaries need an internet connection. That is separate from premium listening, which has no character caps. AI summaries send text to Readox and OpenAI for processing; the privacy policy explains that distinction.

If you want Pro, open Settings → Account in the extension and sign in with the account you want to use for your subscription. If you already have Pro, use that same account to access it.

Canceling renewal does not remove the Pro time you have already paid for. Access continues until the end of your paid billing period. Premium voices remain free after Pro ends.

Start with the voice, not the account

Install or update Readox, pick an English or Spanish premium voice, and confirm the first-time download. That is all you need for premium listening.

The point of this release is straightforward: better everyday listening should be available before you decide whether summaries and a bigger library are useful to you.
